At the center of the Church is Jesus Christ, the “most handsome of the sons of men” and the “icon of God the Father.” It is his gracious presence that makes the Church’s Liturgy beautiful. Inspired by this perfect beauty of Christ, the Church throughout the ages has created beautiful works of art for use in the Liturgy as well as to foster the arts in the surrounding culture. The music program at the Cathedral of St. John Berchmans joyfully inherits this tradition. The choirs of the Cathedral weekly present the artistic treasures of the Church in the context of the Liturgy. The Concert Series seeks to carry this beauty out into the community. All of this is presented free of charge so that all people may be exposed to the beauty of the arts and by it be led to the perfect beauty of Christ.

Videos: Easter Organ Recital
Aaron is a north Louisiana native and Airline High School graduate. He began piano lessons at age 6, and included in his early teachers of piano and organ Dr. Dan Gibbs, the late Earl Strange, and Dr. Holly Watson. He began serving churches in the area as organist or organist/choirmaster as a teenager. He furthered his education at the prestigious Eastman School of Music for a summer while in high school, and attended the University of Houston’s Moore’s School of Music. He was the recipient of the First Place Award in the 33rd Annual William C. Hall Pipe Organ Competition. Aaron is an accomplished choral director, baritone soloist, organist and pianist.
A native of Odessa, Texas, Fr. McLelland grew up in the church where his mother served as organist and his father taught Sunday School. There he played in the band, sang in the church choir, and studied piano and music theory with Mrs. Ethleston Chapman. Dr. Emmet G. Smith became his next music mentor, with whom he studied organ at Texas Christian University while earning a degree in Church Music. Before entering Perkins School of Theology, SMU and earning a Master of Theology degree, he spent a year in Germany on a Fulbright Scholarship, studying organ with Dr. Michael Schneider. As an ordained United Methodist minister, James pastored Louisiana churches for some 22 years before following God’s call to the Catholic Church and to the priesthood. Since ordination as priest, he has served as Parochial Administrator to St. Catherine and St. Clement parishes as well as Chaplain at Loyola College Prep and at CHRISTUS Highland Hospital. Now retired, he and his wife Velma enjoy more time together and with their children and grandchildren.
