Diocese of Shreveport and the Cathedral of St. John Berchmans to Host Prayer Service for Abuse in the Church

All Invited to a Prayer Vigil of Reparation and Petition

SHREVEPORT, LA – The Roman Catholic Diocese of Shreveport is holding a prayer service at the Cathedral of St. John Berchmans on Friday, September 14. All are invited to an evening of prayer to ask for His mercy upon His Church in this moment of profound crisis. The faithful come to make reparation for their own sins, and especially those of bishops and priests. They come also in confident hope that from Christ’s superabounding mercy will come the purification, healing and restoration of holiness for which the Church longs.

This event will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. All are invited to come and go during that time. Priests from across North Louisiana will be in attendance, and there will be opportunities for confession.

During this prayer vigil, clergy and members of the faithful will ask for reparation for all sins of sexual abuse and sexual immorality, especially by members of the Catholic clergy; all sins of cowardice, deception, sloth and self-protection, especially among those in positions of authority in the Church; and all forms of scandal and infidelity.

Together the faithful will pray in petition for the graces of healing for the victims of sexual abuse; purgation of the Church from all evil; rooting out of all compromise and infidelity from the faithful, and those of bishops and priests.

This prayer vigil is the first official act from Father Peter Mangum, Rector of the Cathedral,  upon his election as Diocesan Administrator for the Diocese of Shreveport, following Bishop Michael Duca’s appointment to the Diocese of Baton Rouge. Father Mangum will manage the Diocese of Shreveport until a new bishop is appointed to Shreveport by the Vatican.

Father Mangum said of the coming event, “On September 14th, we’re going to have a special prayer vigil, in our Cathedral church. Please join me and people from around the diocese for this prayer vigil for reparation and petition, that we will all ask God’s mercy on His Church in this moment of profound crisis, to make reparation for our own sins and those of our bishops and priests, and to pray especially for healing for victims of sexual abuse and for the purification of the Church from all evil.”

The Catholic Diocese of Shreveport was created and established by Pope John Paul II on June 16, 1986. Most Rev. William B. Friend was named as the first bishop and installed on July 30, 1986. The Diocese of Shreveport was the seventh diocese in Louisiana. The diocese covers 11,200 square miles and 16 parishes. The second bishop of Shreveport, Most Rev. Michael G. Duca was ordained and installed in the Diocese of Shreveport on May 19, 2008. He was installed as the Bishop of the Diocese of Baton Rouge on August 24, 2018. On August 27, 2018, Fr. Peter Mangum was elected Diocesan Administrator. At this time the Diocese of Shreveport awaits the official appointment of a new bishop for the Diocese of Shreveport from the Holy See. ##
