St. John Berchmans is the patron saint of altar servers.

When our parish searched for a Saint John Berchmans statue and other memorabilia to give as gifts to our altar servers, students and parishioners, we discovered a lack of statues. Therefore, we commissioned Art Studio Demetz in Italy to design, sculpt and prototype a smaller version similar to the white statue of St. John that stands in the center of the high altar, the reredos, in the Cathedral (see statue on right).

The prototype created is also a white statue, made of resin, and stands almost 8″ tall.  Please see information below on how to acquire one of these statues.

In 2014, a professional artist took our white statue and beautifully enhanced it by applying antique finishes (ivory, bronze and clay).

Consider one of the above St. John Berchmans statues for students, Confirmands and Altar Servers.  All statues are identical, with different finishes.  Left to right: Antique Ivory, Antique Bronze, Full Color, Antique Clay, Original White (purely mimics the statue made in the early 1900s that is found in our reredos – see upper right picture)

SJB Comic book page with Heart anniv medalAn inspiring story about a young man who chose to become a Jesuit based on the heroic example of St. Aloysius Gonzaga. With a strong devotion to the Blessed Mother, and a strong desire to practice virtue, young Berchmans would become one of the greatest saints in the Catholic Church. This story is sure to touch the hearts of young and old alike. St. John Berchmans was canonized in 1888, and his feast day is celebrated throughout the church on November 26.  Read the newly completed story of St. John Berchmans on Deacon Andy’s website.  Email us if you wish to purchase a copy.  If you wish to order 10 or more, contact Deacon Andy.  These book are ideal gifts for your altar servers.

Deacon Andrew Thomas is a graduate of Ringling College of Art and Design, and worked for four years professionally as a graphic designer, illustrator, and sculptor before entering Notre Dame Theological Seminary in New Orleans, Louisiana and now is married with four children and serves a permanent deacon in the Diocese of Charleston, South Carolina.  He started Bonaventure Comics with hopes to participate in Pope St. John Paul II’s vision of the “New Evangelization,” using comics to spread the Gospel message to our youth. Deacon Andy’s most recent project, The Life of St. John Berchmans, is most special to him.
